I saw this little device on Facebook a week or so ago posted by a fellow retro enthusiast – I must be honest, I had never seen this peripheral for the Spectrum before so my interest was piqued.

After a little rummaging around on E-bay, I found a single auction for the ZX-BOX and offered £22 which was accepted.

As all ZX Spectrum owners and fans know, the computer has a beeper chip but no amplification. This little device sorts that by taking power from the Sinclair PSU and plugging into the EAR socket on the back of the Speccy. There is a volume control on the box to then turn the amplified sound up and down and it works pretty well. The Spectrum’s beeper chip is amplified – it does what it says on the tin! It works with the Spectrum and Spectrum +. I will check if it works on the 128K and other models as I keep playing with it.

One must ask why Clive did not include such a piece of kit as standard on the Spectrum – it’s something that should have just come in the box.
