A few years ago we ran a small article about the MEGA65 project which aims to recreate the legendary Commodore C65 (or 64D depending on your viewpoint).

Since that article in 2016 the team have made some very impressive progress, to the point that they even have working prototype boards which boot into C65 and C64 modes.

The official website is reporting some very promising progress in the main areas of development. Work on the case is 89% complete, the VHDL code and the circuit board are on the home stretch as both are over 90% done. To see the amount of work and passion being put into the project then look no further than the C65 blog run by the MEGA65’s system architect, Paul Gardner-Stephen.

We certainly can’t report every detail of the team’s work in this short update, but rest assured we will continue to watch the MEGA65 project with keen interest, after all, who wouldn’t like to have a C65 sitting on their desk?

No news yet on how the project will be funded for production or a release date has been forthcoming, but as soon as we know it’ll be on Retro-Now.
