Unless you are lucky enough to own a Vectrex or have pockets deep enough to stretch to a classic arcade game like Asteroids, then chances are you have never played any vector games on original hardware. Well, this is about to change with some very clever hacking in the shape of the Ocelot console. But before you rush off to place a pre-order though do check you have an old CRT oscilloscope handy – you’re going to need it.
The Ocelot takes a handful of cheap off the shelf components which it turns into a small tabletop system that run vector based games specifically written for it. Mattsteroids is a nice clone of the classic Atari Asteroids games, albeit on a smaller scale, whilst Star Lynx is a 3Dshooter that gives a knowing nod to Starfox.
OK, so it’s not really ready to be sold in Argos or Walmart quite just yet but for anyone who fancies a project and has some electronics knowledge, it could be a lot of fun. With any luck the creator will continue to develop it,…who knows in a few years we may all have a scope sitting next to our old CRT’s just so we can play real vector games.
