I’m hoping to travel to Japan later this year for a holiday so like many people I’ve turned to YouTube for research, which has turned into an addiction to one series of programs.
I stumbled across the “Japanology” series, produced by NHK for an English speaking audience, with well over 200 episodes covering all aspects of Japanese life and culture this series is an amazing resource for anyone thinking of making the trip.
To my delight, one of the latest episodes is all about Japanese game arcades and includes an interview with Tomohiro Nishikado, the developer of Space Invaders. The episode also covers much more about the role and culture of the arcade in Japan as well as showing how they have developed. For someone who has great memories of UK arcades from the 80’s & 90’s, it was interesting to see how Japan has continued its love affair with them.
Keep your eyes peeled, there are many classic arcades games of all types (not just video games) throughout the episode. It has certainly made sure that I’ll be checking out as many as I can when I am there.
